Senior pets have special health requirements that mean they may need to spend a bit more time visiting with a veterinary expert. At Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Hell’s Kitchen, we have the experience working with senior pets to provide the highest level of care for your aging best friend— from pain management to surgery and treatment of age-related issues.
Caring For Your Senior Pet
We strive to be there during each stage of your pet’s life all the way to their golden years.
Our pets’ lives are short and sweet. In fact, many breeds are considered seniors by the age of seven. As your pet ages, they require greater care to stay happy, healthy and active. Just like humans, older pets have a slowed immune system, making them more vulnerable to disease and illness. Senior pets are more prone to conditions such as arthritis, blindness, dental disease, diabetes, kidney disease, dementia and cancer.
Senior pets benefit tremendously from frequent wellness visits. We typically recommend seniors visit us at least twice a year so we can keep a closer eye on changing health trends and catch conditions as early as possible. At Pure Paws Veterinary Care of Hell’s Kitchen, we commonly recommend more tests and routine health screenings, because even a seemingly healthy pet may have an underlying and symptomless, yet harmful, condition.
Here are some essential tests for senior pets:
- Blood work pinpoints infections, anemia and age-related conditions such as diabetes, kidney failure, liver disease, and much more.
- X-rays identify issues that may not be detected with a wellness exam or blood work such as arthritis and cancer.
- Urinalysis is a great indication of your pet’s overall health. We commonly use urinalysis to screen for urinary tract infections, liver disease and diabetes.
If you notice any changes at all in your senior pet’s behavior or health, give us a call right away.
